Sitting for protracted periods increases risk of diabetes ... - Health.am

? Diabetes ? ? Heart ? Oct 14, 2012

A new study led by the University of Leicester, in association with colleagues at Loughborough University, has discovered that sitting for long periods increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease and death.

The study, which combined the results of 18 studies and included a total of 794,577 participants, was led by Dr. Emma Wilmot, a research fellow in the Diabetes Research Group at the University of Leicester. It was done in collaboration with colleagues from the newly established National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester-Loughborough Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity Biomedical Research Unit and was published in Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association of the Study of Diabetes.

According to the study, those who sit for long periods have a two fold increase in their risk of diabetes, heart disease and death. Importantly, associations were independent of the amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity undertaken, suggesting that even if an individual meets typical physical activity guidelines, their health may still be compromised if they sit for long periods of time throughout the day.

Dr Wilmot, a Clinical Research Fellow in Diabetes and Endocrinology based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, Leicester General Hospital, said: ?The average adult spends 50-70% of their time sitting so the findings of this study have far reaching implications. By simply limiting the time that we spend sitting, we may be able to reduce our risk of diabetes, heart disease and death?.

"Our study also showed that the most consistent associations were between sitting and diabetes. This is an important message because people with risk factors for diabetes, such as the obese, those of South Asian ethnic origin, or those with a family history of diabetes, may be able to help reduce their future risk of diabetes by limiting the time spent sitting. ?

Professor Stuart Biddle, of Loughborough University, and a co-investigator on the study, said: ?There are many ways we can reduce our sitting time, such as breaking up long periods at the computer at work by placing our laptop on a filing cabinet. We can have standing meetings, we can walk during the lunch break, and we can look to reduce TV viewing in the evenings by seeking out less sedentary behaviours.?

Professor Melanie Davies, Professor of Diabetes Medicine at the University of Leicester and honorary consultant at University Hospitals of Leicester is a co-investigator and Director of the NIHR Leicester-Loughborough Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity Biomedical Research Unit. She said:

?This paper has a very important message for the public but also for health care professionals - namely that being sedentary is common and dangerous for our long term health, particularly for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and that this link appears to be over and above other lifestyle factors such as our diet and physical activity.?

Imperative Facts About Acquiring Very Affordable Website Hosting ...

We are going to explore right here why f-r-e-e internet hosting is really an awful plan. Everything will start while using term ?free?, therefore you will understand why these webhosting online businesses markets their website hosting as cost-free.

Rationale one: Loaded with commercials

Anyone that owns an internet site is often aiming to do 1 of a couple of things; both earn cash or purchase a place throughout. For the majority of of us, it?s generating dough that lures us into pondering generating an internet site. The cash manufactured can originate from some various ways, but we?re going to concentrate on advertising and marketing and advertising products and services since the key strategies sites make cash. With costless webhosting companies, the businesses will load your internet sites with commercials as a way to generate profits. You could possibly be pondering ?don?t I obtain a lower of that??, and also respond to is totally not.

To operate and residence world-wide-web servers there has to be people, a bodily site, and space for mistake. So that you can buy all of this, because you will not be purchasing the internet internet hosting, they may have to think about first options to help make finances. When your website is on their server, they have got the perfect to submit advertisements on the website, article popups and pop-unders, and monetize your internet site on the way they need.

Explanation two: You will get blacklisted for the spammer directory

Currently being that spammers are infamous for employing cost-free website hosts, you could possibly be perceived as currently being a component for the spamming, so your website can get blacklisted. Chances are you may consult ?how is that this practical??. Its for the reason that as soon as you are with a zero cost server, all people on that server shares the identical IP deal with, indicating that everybody who?s on that IP tackle is chargeable for the subject material that 1 webpage in that server may likely place out. Therefore if a single individual that is within the server decides they wish to spam, then almost everyone receives blacklisted plus your on the darkish.

My information is, if you happen to consider you are likely to acquire a significant page in almost any way, it?s your most suitable option to go along with a compensated type of world-wide-web host. You?ll notice ample amounts in existence for underneath $5 per month, and spammers are more unlikely to implement these kinds of internet hosting strategies.

Good reason three: Hacking threat

So now if you should figure out to go together with a cost-free internet hosting business enterprise, your related information is on the market with the general public, and any one else that has usage of that server. This suggests that any person with all the familiarity with hacking could get on to the resource site and do the things they just want to it. Certainly its unlawful, but inside environment of your on line you can still never ever be harmless. The net is just about everywhere, which includes relatively distant sections in the planet, so you know the way bored the families in distant Siberia quite possibly are. You?ll discover those that hack web pages for enjoyment, as well as the optimal discussion board for that could be costless internet hosting designs.

Rationale four: Tiny to no purchaser assist

Should you buy an online internet hosting enterprise, that you are not simply purchasing the security and stability of the managed server, that you?re purchasing the assistance far too. Along with a totally free internet hosting method, because you are usually not purchasing the products, there may be not reason behind these manufacturers to head out in their tactic to enable you out. like I says ahead of, they may be in it to market in your webpage and earn a living off of that. They do not treatment if you cannot log in for your regulate panel, simply because they just need to make financial resources and be still left on your own.

Summary:

While you can see, applying a free of cost internet hosting provider could be frustrating and never well worth the time. They?re going to be loaded with adverts unrelated with your company, additionally, the servers typically are not certain any uptime. Spammers share the identical IP deal with while you, creating you a focus on for to be blacklisted if stuff go this way. In case you are just commencing out, you can obtain incredibly economical internet hosting programs with wonderful help. All in all, stay clear of completely free hosing web-sites if you need to develop any kind of honest online business.

My Mummy's Pennies: Entering the world of Special Educational ...

My son is a bright, bubbly and imaginative child with a smile that cannot fail to light up even the dullest of days. The kind and caring way he plays with his younger sister makes me so proud. She looks up to him and learns so much from her 'Big Ben'. Knowing she is younger than him and he has to set an example he will often give up his favourite toys to her, if she's upset he will do a silly dance and pull faces to see her smile again. The capacity for empathy in one so young amazes me sometimes...... And his imagination, wow! An imaginary friend? No, not for him, he has a whole host of?imaginary?superheros, sometimes they come out and play with us and other times they stay at home and tidy his room or read his books! Every night after the bedtime story, he tell a story 'out of his head'. The?protagonists?are usually whoever he has been playing with in school that day and they have all sorts of adventures from visiting outer space, riding in a fire engine or flying in an aeroplane!

He is a?truly?wonderful little boy, however he does have developmental issues. He had a speech delay, and at the age of two only had a few words. Now at five, his language has developed?fantastically?and he often surprises me with the sophisticated?sentences?he comes out with, but he still has speech and communication problems, finding it difficult to get his words out when excited or under pressure. He also has difficulty concentrating and can be easily distracted. Non of this worries me too much and I know given time he will overcome these difficulties.?Unfortunately these are not his only issues. He is?hyper-mobile?and??has very poor fine and gross motor skills to the point that he has great?difficulty?holding a pencil., In fact Elizabeth who is not yet two has better pen control than he does. He struggles with some?physical?activity?and cannot yet pedal ?on a bike.

Last month he started Year 1, and it was a big step for him, away from he 'playroom' like reception class and into a real learning environment. I was excited for him , but also nervous... how would he cope? How would he get on with a new teacher?

During last year we were?often?told of his?difficulties?and how he was developing 'behind' his peers and it was implied that he wasn't really 'trying'. This was sometimes blamed on his age (yes he's an August baby...), but instead of being offered advice and support to help him, I felt that they had almost given up on him and would just let him play with bricks in the corner, while they taught the 'smarter' children..

Yesterday was his first parents evening in Year One and although his new teacher did talk about the areas that he was struggling in, instead of sounding disappointed in him she highlighted the things that he excelled in, his kindness, his imagination and creativeness and how hard he tried at everything he did. We were also told about the extra support he was getting, met the SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator) and given tips on how we could encourage his development at home, so instead of that familiar feeling of dread, I left feeling so proud of my gorgeous son and knowing that although he was a child with Special Educational Needs he was going to get the support he needed to overcome his difficulties.

So why am I writing this? It may sound like it, but I am not trying to to highlight my sons weaknesses, simply trying to convince myself that he does need help and support and that by accepting this I am not branding him as 'different' or dare I even say it... 'stupid'.

Having constantly fought the label of special needs (being Dyspraxic myself) throughout my own education, it's not easy for me to accept that Ben needs help, however I want my?beautiful,?bright son to be able to reach his full potential and I need to come to terms with the fact that to do that he will need a little more support than his friends.

This is my first encounter with SEN as a parent and I don't know what is in store over the coming?months?and years but I do know that I will making sure that my son has the full support he needs to?fulfill?his potential. Do you have experience with SEN? Please do share and let me know what to expect....

(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky and at least some of his victims plan to address the judge at his sentencing, a proceeding that may last less than two hours, lawyers said after a closed-door meeting to iron out logistics ahead of the Tuesday hearing.

Sandusky lawyer Joe Amendola said "it's as certain as certain can be" that the former Penn State assistant football coach will speak to Judge John Cleland and assert his innocence before he is sentenced on 45 counts of child sexual abuse.

"What I anticipate he'll say is he's innocent," Amendola said outside the courthouse Monday afternoon.

Amendola said he did not expect any others to speak on Sandusky's behalf, although friends and family members ? including his wife, Dottie ? have written letters of support. Dottie Sandusky plans to attend the hearing, he said.

Given the number of charges, the serious nature of his crimes and his age, the 68-year-old Sandusky faces the likelihood of a sentence that will send him to state prison for the rest of his life. Sandusky was convicted in June of abusing 10 boys over 15 years, including some attacks inside Penn State athletic facilities.

"The important thing for us is, it starts the appellate process," Amendola said.

One element of the appeal is expected to be a claim that the defense did not have time to adequately prepare for trial. Sandusky was charged in November, following a lengthy investigation.

Tom Kline, lawyer for a young man who said Sandusky groped him in a shower when he was 12 or 13, said his client plans to read a statement Tuesday.

"He's going to tell the judge how this has affected him, how it's been painful and difficult," Kline said.

Lead prosecutor Joe McGettigan said as many as a half-dozen victims are expected to be heard.

The eight victims who testified against Sandusky at trial described abuse that ranged from grooming and fondling to oral and anal sex. Sandusky did not take the stand but gave interviews shortly after his arrest in which he declared he was not guilty.

Karl Rominger, another Sandusky defense lawyer, said the sentencing and a related proceeding to determine if Sandusky qualifies as a sexually violent predator under Pennsylvania's version of Megan's Law should take less than two hours.

Rominger said a 30-year minimum sentence ? which would keep Sandusky behind bars at least until he's nearly 100 ? was probably the most the defense could hope for.

Rominger said on WHP radio that Sandusky knows the judge could impose a longer sentence if Sandusky insists he is innocent, but some offenses carry mandatory minimums that are likely to translate into an effective life sentence.

"Why worry about the niceties of pleasing the court when it won't change your sentence?" Rominger said.

Along with Sandusky, prosecutors last year also arrested two Penn State administrators and charged them with lying to the grand jury that investigated Sandusky and failing to properly report suspected abuse. Tim Curley, the athletic director on leave, and Gary Schultz, a retired vice president for business and finance, deny the charges and await trial.

The case led to the firing of longtime head football coach Joe Paterno, who died from lung cancer in January, and the ouster of university President Graham Spanier, who remains a faculty member. Eight legal teams that represent at least 20 victims or other potential civil claimants have surfaced, and Penn State has indicated its desire to settle claims out of court.

After Tuesday's sentencing hearing, Sandusky most likely would be sent to Camp Hill state prison. There, he would be tested and evaluated by Department of Corrections personnel, who will determine which institution he will be sent to.

Innovative Healthcare Organizations Going Viral With Flu and Infection

By Tracy Granzyk MS

First Posted at Educate the Young?on 10/8/2012

Tracy Granzyk, health care writer and journalist

Wayne Gretzky once said, ?I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.? Steve Jobs echoed those same words. Two leaders who set the bar in their respective fields with their creativity?Gretzky?s innovation on ice remains a gift to young players who still try to emulate his moves in rinks across the country, and Jobs? magic with mobile device development continues to open doors in the way information is gathered, formatted and shared. Outside the box thinking put into action is how real innovation takes life, moving the next generation forward. Health system leaders with courage and creativity, like Gretzky and Jobs, are perfecting their own innovative approaches to protect patients from the transmission of flu and infection.

Bert Fish Medical Center?in New Smyrna Beach, FL created the following video on hand washing to prevent the spread of disease-causing bacteria in their community. The video was entered into a contest sponsored by?Planetree, a ?non-profit organization providing education and information in a collaborative community of healthcare organizations, facilitating efforts to create patient- centered care in healing environments?:

Larger healthcare organizations like?MedStar Health?in Washington DC and Maryland, and?Virginia Mason Medical Center?(VMMC) in Seattle, WA are enlisting care providers to ?do as I do? by getting a flu shot in the spirit of patient safety. With healthcare provider influenza vaccination rates at 36-54% nationally, depending on when/who is collecting the data, leadership in both of these forward-looking healthcare environments took matters into their own hands.

Lynne Karanfil, RN, CIC, Corporate Coordinator, Infection Prevention at MedStar, Bill Thomas, MD, EVP Medical Affairs & CMO along with colleagues, published their results around the institution of a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination program during the 2009-2010 flu season for all MedStar healthcare providers and affiliated physicians in the April 2011 issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology article,?Championing Patient Safety Through Mandatory Influenza Vacccination for All Healthcare Personnel and Affiliated Physicians.?The program was instituted in the best interest of MedStar patients, and with 99.9% compliance to the policy, it appears as though MedStar healthcare providers felt the same way.

VMMC went to their sweet spot?rapid process improvement workshops?and applied the system?s improvement methodology to increase the number of patients who received a flu shot. The result was a ?flu drive-through,? that made getting a flu shot as simple for patients as ?rolling down their window and rolling up their sleeve?. Care providers met patients in a circular driveway nearby the hospital, gave the flu shot and the patient was on with their day. On the VMMC provider side, increasing the percentage of those vaccinated became an obvious next step, especially when the patient was put at the top of the VMMC strategic plan. Starting in 2006, there were now two choices at VMMC?get a flu shot or work somewhere else. While push back from the nurse?s union occurred in the first year this new employment requirement was instituted, 98% of all health care providers received the flu vaccine. The following year, the topic was no longer a cause for discussion?continued proof how truly dedicated the great majority of healthcare providers are to keep their patients safe.

In the spirit of flu season, please share your own creative solutions and examples of infection control, flu vaccination and viral video education!

Investors prepare for Obama victory, more gridlock

By MATTHEW CRAFT, Associated Press

NEW YORK --?As President Barack Obama widened his lead over Mitt Romney in polls this month, traders at hedge funds and investment firms began shooting e-mails to clients with a similar theme: It's time to start preparing for an Obama victory.?

What many in the market worry about isn't that high earners may pay more in taxes if Obama wins. It's gridlock in Washington come January, when more than $600 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes could kick in just as the country smacks into its borrowing limit again.?

In a second term, Obama would likely be pitted against a Republican-controlled House of Representatives. Investors say that's likely to set up a budget battle similar to August of last year, which ended with the country losing its top credit rating and panicked investors fleeing the stock market.

"If you have any kind of gridlock, you run the risk of inaction," says Tom Simons, a market economist at the investment bank Jefferies. "This is a situation where inaction is the worst outcome."

The next fight could get just as messy, but most on Wall Street think Congress and Obama would eventually manage to postpone some of the $600-billion-plus "fiscal cliff" and avoid tipping the economy into a recession.

The Congressional Budget Office recently laid out the grim consequences of dropping off the fiscal cliff. The economy would shrink at an annual rate of nearly 3 percent in the first half of next year and push unemployment up to 9.1 percent by the fall. Recent surveys of businesses suggest the threat is already weighing on the minds of executives when they're making hiring and spending plans.

For the world's biggest money managers, the fiscal cliff now ranks as the greatest hazard to the global economy, according to Bank of America's most recent fund manager survey. It topped the European debt crisis, a collapse in Chinese real estate and even a war between Israel and Iran.

The danger looms so large to most investors that they believe Washington will find a way to escape it.

"Ultimately, I think a deal gets done, but it's just a question of how long it takes to get there," says Jeff Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial. "By no means is it going to be an easy process. Gridlock means there's a greater chance that this drags on into next year."

Analysts at investment firms have kept a close eye on polling numbers and especially on the prediction market Intrade. National polls show voters leaning toward Obama. On Intrade, the odds have swung strongly in Obama's direction, jumping to a 76 percent chance of re-election, up from 51 percent at the start of September.

Democrats are far less likely to take the House from Republicans, who hold a 50-seat majority. Intrade markets put the chance that Republicans will control the House at 74 percent.

If these forecasts prove right, the balance of power in Washington would remain the same. Democrats keep the White House and a slim majority in the Senate, and Republicans keep the House.

What troubles investors is that the same cast of characters who fought over raising the debt ceiling last year could be taking up the same task again while debating how best to maneuver around the fiscal cliff.

Expect to see a replay of the debt-ceiling fight, says Ian Lyngen, a senior government bond strategist at CRT Capital. Except that this time the stakes are even higher.

"I'm sure it's going to go just like it did last time ? very messy," Lyngen says. "It will probably be a repeat of what we saw in the summer of 2011."

In one dizzying stretch that August, the Dow Jones industrial average dropped 2,000 points in three weeks.

The widespread belief on Wall Street is that Congress and Obama will start negotiations over raising the debt limit and pushing back the fiscal cliff when they return in late November ? the so-called lame-duck session, because newly elected members of Congress will not have taken their seats.

Twists in the talks will likely rattle markets as the new year approaches.

"Ugly negotiations in the lame-duck session could really throw the market for a loop," says Kleintop. "It could be a painful process for investors."

In a report out this week, analysts at Goldman Sachs tried to estimate just how painful the process will be. Goldman expects the stock market will start sinking after the elections as people realize the fiscal cliff "will not be solved in a smooth fashion."

That's the reason Goldman forecasts that one broad measure of the stock market, the Standard & Poor's 500 index, will end this year at 1,250 ? a 13 percent drop from where it closed Thursday.

But all of that mayhem sounds better than the alternative: another recession caused by letting the $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts through. It's also why many take solace in the idea that, whatever their political party, nobody wants the economy to shrink.

Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at the brokerage BTIG, wonders if that's placing too much faith in Washington. "Republicans aren't losing the House," Greenhaus said. "So as the odds of Obama winning reelection go up, what you have to ask is: How are these two parties going to find middle ground in just a few months? I have no idea."

Below, James Poterba, National Bureau of Economic Research president, explains to CNBC how current fiscal policy could lead the nation into a recession if the economy falls off the fiscal cliff.
