Franklin Wepner of Newton-Conover High has been named the Catawba Valley Athletic 2A?s player of the year in boys? soccer, conference officials announced Wednesday.

Wepner led the Red Devils to the state 2A semifinals and is one of five Newton-Conover picks for the All-CVAC 2A team. South Iredell, which won the regular-season title, had five picks and head coach David Basinger was named league coach of the year.

BASEBALL

Hickory?s Jarrett to play for Charlotte

Hickory High third baseman Zach Jarrett has signed to play college baseball for Charlotte, Hickory school officials announced Wednesday.

Jarrett hit .355 with six doubles, three triples and 15 RBI as a junior and was selected to the All-Catawba Valley Easter Classic team and was a All-Northwestern 3A-4A selection. He also plays varsity basketball for the Red Tornadoes.

?We are extremely happy for Zach and all of his accomplishments on and off the field,? Red Tornadoes head baseball coach David Craft said in a news release. ?He has certainly been a pleasure to coach. Zach has excelled because of his hard work and his determination. We look forward to his playing during his senior year and following his success at UNCC.?

Jarrett is from the well-known NASCAR family and his parents, Dale and Kelley, were both standout high school athletes at Newton-Conover High.

FOOTBALL

Pre-sale tickets for LRU game available

Lenoir-Rhyne University has set ticket prices for Saturday?s opening football game in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Admission for the noon kickoff at Moretz Stadium for the LRU against Fort Valley State (Ga.) game will be $6 for reserve and $5 for general admission. Tickets are $3 for students with proper identification and also for kids.

Tickets are now available. To pre-order, contact Matt Peterson at 328-7007 or online at matt.peterson@lr.edu. Pre-order tickets will be available on Saturday at will call.

BASKETBALL

Limestone 71, Lenoir-Rhyne 50

Maria Young?s 23 points, plus 14 by teammate Tia Williams, sparked host Limestone to a victory over the Lenoir-Rhyne University women in Gaffney, S.C.

Sophomore guard Jazmine Charles led the Bears, making their season debut, with 12 points.

Limestone (2-0) never trailed and was up 33-20 by halftime. The Saints led by as many as 23 points in the second half.

Senior guard Whitley Culler had eight points for LRU, which shot 28 percent.

The Saints won the boards 53-45 and forced the Bears into 17 turnovers.

LRU?s next game is in the Comfort Suites Classic at Catawba College on Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. against Barton.

Alex Central sets up season?s game times

Alexander Central High announced the starting times for its basketball season.

Any games scheduled Monday through Thursday will have the junior varsity girls starting at 4 p.m., followed by the junior varsity boys with a 6 p.m. tipoff for varsity girls and the varsity boys to follow.

Friday night games will be scheduled to start at 4 p.m, with admission $5.

The Cougars? first games are Tuesday at home against Davie County.

Commission sets dates for Catawba Valley Classic

The Hickory Metro Sports Commission announced the fields and playing dates for the 26th annual Catawba Valley Classic high school basketball tournament on Wednesday.

Boys? and girls? teams from Alexander Central, Bunker Hill, Fred T. Foard, Hickory, Maiden, Newton-Conover, South Caldwell and St. Stephens will play games from Dec. 27-29.

The first two days will have boys? games at Catawba Valley Community College and girls? games at Hickory High. On Dec. 29, all games will be played at CVCC.

Tournament pairings will be determined in mid-December.

VOLLEYBALL

Unbeaten CVCC opens play in national tourney

Catawba Valley Community College?s unbeaten women?s volleyball team opens play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament today in Toledo, Ohio.

The Bucs (34-0), the District P champion, are seeded No. 14 in a 16-team field and open against No. 3 seed Parkland (42-7) in a 9 a.m. match.

If CVCC wins, it will play again today at 3 p.m. against the winner of a match between Moraine Valley (35-0) and Central Columbus (30-10). If the Bucs lose, they?ll play the loser of that match on Friday at 10 a.m.

The tournament is scheduled today through Saturday.
